With the recent news that Thingiverse is being acquired by the MyMiniFactory, what does the future of the largest and oldest repository for 3D print files look like? Will 3D printing ever be the same? Come to think of it, was it really that good before this?
Thinking more about it, I think if Thingiverse isn’t 100% focused on education that they’ll be missing the point. Thingiverse is and remains the #1 place people go to look for 3D print files because it’s on so many syllabuses around the world. I kid you not. Go to any school with a 3D printer and ask to see their syllabus and it will say Thingiverse on it. Not Yeggi. Not Printables. Thingiverse. And the thing about a syllabus is it might as well be written in stone. Those things are impossible to change. So I hope MyMiniFactory realizes this and pivots accordingly.
But overall, at this point I don’t think they can make Thingiverse any worse.
I realized in the edit that I had already told my MyMiniFactory story in another video a while back and I considered not repeating myself here. However, after watching that video… yikes. The audio was so bad I tried to hide it with some music overlay and it did not work. How far I’ve come. But that’s what the end cards are for.
