Often when discussing 3D printing file format, there is a vocal minority insisting that we should all abandon STL for STEP. And I am here to say “NO!”
I suspect there may come a day when generative AI will be capable of turning mesh data into STEP data. And on that day I mourn for the death of geometry. Never mind the mess that people will try to feed into it that it was not trained on, I’ve already seen what it does with arduino code, and it makes me cringe. Heck, I’ve already edited the meshes of STEP data and that’s bad enough. Mismatched bevels into disconnected cubes… why do people want more of this?
I am currently uploading this ahead of the PrintAQuest kickstarter, so that while the kickstarter is running I can just hit “make public” and I’ll have a video to run while I’m, hopefully, knee deep in doing 3D modeling for PrintAQuest. So, since there’s a chance that you came to this from the video, and there’s a chance you expect me to respond to the kickstarter as though it were live, let me just make some stuff up.
Thank you to the thousands of people who have already backed and the dozens of influencers that were inspired by this campaign and shared it with their audiences unprompted and unpaid. Blowing past every stretch goal in the first day was an unexpected and unprecedented feat. I hope you will all join me on stream 3 days as I fulfill the obligations of this campaign. And as the remaining month of this campaign continues, we will work on additional stretch goals and I will begin to build the new studio and workspace where I will be a full time content creator going forward. Thank you all. To infinity, and BEYOND!
